Buhari's Anti-corruption Gets UN Backing

The anti-corruption crusade of President Muhammadu Buhari’s government has received a major boost as the United Nations (UN) has pledged its support for the government’s cause.
To underscore its seriousness, the UN Secretary General, Ban Ki Moon, this weekend, sent a powerful delegation to meet with the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN) at his office in Abuja.

The delegation which was led by UN Special Envoy on ECOWAS, Dr Mohammed Ibn Chambas, also expressed its readiness to support Nigeria in its quest to put an end to terrorism in the country.
According to a statement by the Director of Information at the Federal Ministry of Justice‎, Mr Nwodo Charles, ‎Chambas said the UN will cooperate with Nigeria to strengthen the administration of justice, rule of law and respect for human rights in the country.
He stated that there was need for all African countries in the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC) to form a common front against the menace of terrorism, especially with regards to the spreading activities of the Boko Haram ‎sect.
Parts of the statement read: ”While congratulating the Minister on behalf of United Nations on his appointment, he noted the land mark achievements resulting from the free, fair and credible elections that were recently conducted in Nigeria, this he said has brought progress to Africa’s nascent democracy.
”Dr. Chambas was optimistic that with the completion of the remaining 100km border posts, Boko Haram terrorists will be defeated”.

Responding, the minister said he was pleased with the level of success so far recorded by the Nigeria/Cameroon Joint Border Commission, in terms of resolving cross border disputes between the two countries.
He stated that the Muhammadu Buhari administration would be committed towards ensuring that unnecessary border disputes within the Lake Chad Basin areas are resolved amicably.
He informed the delegation that Nigeria is currently working with other countries on reforms and protocols that will ultimately, bring about everlasting peace in the West African region.
According to Vanguard, he assured them that the federal government is willing to further deepen the cordial relationship that had existed among the countries in the region.

Also speaking on the ongoing  anti-corruption war in Nigeria, the AGF said the administration of President Buhari would not relent on its effort to bring to book, anyone found to have economically sabotaged the nation.

Arms Deal: EFCC Set To Question Goodluck Jonathan

The immediate past president, Goodluck Jonathan is set to undergo questioning from operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over the now popular arms deal scandal.
Ex-President Goodluck Jonathan

Reports suggest that the anti-graft agency may secretly write the ex-president whose name it claim has consistently come up in the investigation into the scandal.
Recall that the former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.), was reported to have said he disbursed funds from his office based on the instruction of the former President.
An EFCC source said the agency however has no plans to invite the former President but “we may write him to tell us his own side of the story because his name has been coming up in our investigations?” Punch is reporting.

The agency however claims it needs the clearance of the president to write the former number one citizen of Nigeria.
In a related development, EFCC may have concluded arrangements to invite some chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party.
Those expected for questioning are former board of trustees chairman of the party, Chief Tony Anenih; a former deputy national chairman, Chief Bode George, and others, who were alleged to have received part of the funds meant for arms procurement.
“You see, this is an investigation. In a situation like this, the commission has a thin chance of not inviting those whose names have been thrown up.
“They have to be invited to make clarifications; it does not necessarily mean that they have been indicted but it is only a standard procedure for them to appear to make clarifications where necessary.
“I think by now, Anenih, Bode George and all those who were mentioned during the investigation should have been invited but the commission has not been given the directive to pick them up.
“They know what they are doing. Anytime from now, possibly this week, they will be invited” Punch quotes an EFCC source.

El-Rufai sees us as enemies -Shi’ite group says

Members of the Shiite group have released a statement accusing Kaduna state governor Nasir El Rufai as seeing them as enemies of the state. El Rufai had in a state broadcast last Thursday condemned the seeming lawlessness of the group in the state. Read the statement the Shiite group released after the cut...

“It is clear that the governor is more like an extremist anti-Shi’ite governor and not a state governor. Going by the concept and tone of the state broadcast on the extra-judicial killing of thousands of members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria by the Nigerian Army, delivered by the Kaduna State Governor, Nasir Ahmed el-Rufai, it is clear that the governor is more like an extremist anti-Shi’ite governor and not a state governor. Although the governor took his time in his speech to elaborate on rights to religion and social association, but he chose to deny only the Shi’ites such rights who he sees as his enemies. Clearly, he spent considerable time collecting propaganda details indicting the movement, which further buttresses the point that the state governor has his hands soiled by the blood spilled in the mass extra-judicial killings perpetrated by the Army. In that circumstance, no justice should be expected from a speech made up with details only provided by the antagonistic culprits without hearing from the other party who are the victims in this case. During the one-sided speech, he brought up a number of allegations that he said they discovered. We will take up these one after the other. He alleged that our centre had no building permit and such other allegations. One wonders why if the Kaduna state government felt the Hussainiyah was wrongly erected or breached planning permits, they did not resort to legal action rather than use of brutal force. Why not get a court order to effect an eviction? Or does the government mean there are no magistrates or Alkali left in Zaria anymore? For Governor El-Rufai to claim that there is no valid paper on the land on which Husainiyya was built as the basis for this military attack, only further proves that the attack was premeditated. We are equally astonished when the Governor in his broadcast claimed that “they had tried to forcibly acquire the property of their neighbours; this is apart from subjecting residents to an illegal curfew.” We challenge the governor to cite one particular case where we forcibly acquired a property, let alone a time when we imposed curfew. There had been tension in parts of Zaria since Thursday, 10 December 2015, when members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria were alleged to have attacked Gabari, a community on the outskirts of Zaria, in continuation of a dispute over a mosque. We would like to ask Mr. Governor how many disputes over mosques have been reported in the 37 years that the IMN have been there in Zaria? The idea that Shiites will go and take over a Salafi mosque is as laughable as the idea that Christian evangelicals will raid a Catholic cathedral and tell the adherents to get out. This big lie cannot stand any scrutiny. What happened in Gabari is not “Mosque snatching” as the governor claims. It was a case of some Salafist bent on attacking the Shiites in the neighbourhood. In the process they killed one person the week before and a further three Shiites on Thursday. The governor cleverly stated this in his speech as if to show that we were not the victims but the assailants. The Governor made mention of the Arbaeen symbolic trek as an instance where we blocked roads for four days when he stated, “In the last two weeks, the Islamic Movement of Nigeria has also illegally occupied federal roads. Over a period of four days, they took over one side of the federal expressway between Kaduna and Zaria, and the roads to Kano and Katsina. Clearly, this is a deliberate attempt to twist the facts. During the Arbaeen symbolic treks, we block only limited part of the road, and this is to protect persons from traffic accidents, control mass movement and avoid chaos on the roads. The governor here was trying to give the impression of a complete occupation of a lane for four days. That was not the case. Blocks were only from junction to junction on the roads. The public was informed about these little inconveniences with apologies on public radio and television stations throughout the trek. Road users during the period would be surprised by the governor’s statement. How does this compare with similar road blocks by others such as the Military itself that blocks from Jaji to Zaria, and at times from Kaduna to Zaria or within Zaria metropolis during their parades? Citing road block as the reason for this brutal attack is just laughable. Where in the law books is it written that those who block the roads should be massacred without trials?  In addition, members of the movement are alleged to openly carry and use offensive weapons.” They challenged the governor to mention those weapons they found when security agents razed Husainiyya to the ground or Sheikh Zakzaky’s residence. While the military involved in this operation said in its press conference that they did not find any weapons after all the mass killings they did in Zaria, the governor in his desperate attempt to blacklist the movement, still talked of offensive weapons. From the speech of the governor one can deduce that he did all he can to portray the movement as assailants. After leveling all allegations against the movement, the governor went ahead to talk of setting up a Judicial Board of inquiry. One wonders why he didn’t leave the inquiry to determine who are the assailants and who are the victims. Definitely the scope and mission of the inquiry could be problematic. The army is a federal institution. It would be difficult enough for a state judge to inquire into what they have done when they are not answerable to state officials. How will such a judge now also overturn conclusions already reached by the governor?”

Disaster on Miss Universe 2015 as Steve Harvey announces the wrong winner on live TV

Miss Colombia wiped away tears of joy as the $30,000 blue diamond and topaz crown was placed upon her head and she was named Miss Universe 2015, winning the title for her country for the second year in a row. But her glory only lasted for two minutes.
Just as Ariadna Gutierrez was blowing kisses and waving to her adoring fans she was informed, on live television, that it was actually Miss Philippines Pia Alonzo who was meant to be wearing the crown.
Steve Harvey strolled up on stage, the shame already evident on his face, when he told the crowd 'Folks, I have to apologize.''The first runner-up,' he then announced. 'Is Colombia.' 'Miss Universe 2015,' Harvey then dramatically clarified, 'Is Miss Philippines.'

Miss Philippines stared wide-eyed at the audience, her lip quivering as Miss USA whispered into her ear and she realized what exactly those words meant.

Pia joined Ariadna on stage and stared into the audinece in shock, Miss Universe 2014 Paulina Vega giving her fellow countrywoman a comforting pat on the back just minutes after they had shared a victorious embrace.
'Folks let me take control of this,' Harvey told the sea of boos and cheers. 'This is exactly what's on the card,' he then said, displaying the results on the camera. 'I will take responsibility for this, it was my mistake,' he continued.
'I can show it to your right here, the first runner up is Colombia,' it's my mistake, still a great night. Please don't hold it against the ladies.'
And then came for the heartbreaking moment when Miss Colombia had to bend down, allowing Vega, Ms Universe 2014, to remove the crown and place it on Miss Philippines head instead.
The telecast then came to an abrupt stop, cutting without credits or allowing Miss Philippines to take her first walk as Miss Universe.
‘I want to apologize emphatically to Miss Philippians and Miss Columbia,’ Harvey wrote in a tweet that has since been deleted in which he spelled both of the women’s countries wrong. ‘This was a terribly honest human mistake and I am so regretful.’
Fans immediately took to social media to react to the mistake, criticizing Harvey, expressing regret for Miss Colombia and praise for Pia.
‘Hey #SteveHarvey, good thing Pablo Escobar is dead. #MissUniverse2015’, tweeted one user.
Another asked: ‘Can I hug Miss Colombia right now?’
‘I have to hand it to #PiaWurtzbach,’ wrote another. ‘She was careful w her reaction when she was called as Ms Universe. She knew a colleague was embarrassed.

Primark customer reportedly finds letter from Chinese sweatshop worker

A British shopper reportedly discovered a letter from someone claiming to be a Chinese sweatshop worker. The letter was allegedly found inside a pair of socks purchased from Irish clothing retailer, Primark.

Shahkiel Akbar, 25, told U.K. paper the Chronicle, that he purchased the black socks from a Primark store in Newcastle, England, and found a note that was written in Chinese.
Akbar sought to have the contents of the letter translated, eventually relying on a phone app to translate the note into English. Akbar said the note "looked to be an SOS" and the 39-year-old letter writer was forced to make the socks that Akbar purchased.
"I knew it was something sinister when I saw it," Akbar told the paper. "I was really shocked. I do feel responsible now I have found this. I just thought I need to shout it out."
A store spokesman told the media that the company believes the letter to be a hoax. A similar note was reportedly found in another pair of socks bought at the retail chain two weeks ago.
"The Primark name is being used to gain publicity for the plight of this individual," a Primark spokesman said to the media. "We think it is likely that the note was added after production and it is feasible it was added in transit or at a port."

Former US President Jimmy Carter announces unexpected death of grandson

Former President Jimmy Carter announced the unexpected death of his grandson Jeremy to a church class Sunday, just two weeks after he had announced to the same group by revealing he had beaten cancer.

Carter arrived about 25 minutes late to his weekly class at the Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, Ga., and told the congregation his grandson had died just hours earlier, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Carter said Jeremy, 28, was not feeling well Saturday and took a nap in the family’s Peachtree City home. Hours later, his mother found him and realized his heart had stopped, Carter said. He died in a hospital Sunday morning, and the cause of death has not been announced.
Churchgoers told the Journal-Constitution Carter broke the heartbreaking news, then continued with his class and even stayed to take pictures with those in attendance.
“I’m not surprised,” church member Jan Williams told the paper. “That’s the kind of Christian he is. Everything that happens in life, good or bad, he uses as a teaching experience.”

OPC Urges FG To Dialogue With Biafra Agitators

The Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC) has urged the federal government to dialogue with members of the Movement for the Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) and the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
This was the position of the National President of the group, Otuba Gani Adams, who opined that it is only through dialogue that the Biafra agitators can be made to drop the idea of a Biafra state; adding that the use of force is incapable of guaranteeing the unity of the country.

Adams made the comments at Osogbo, the Osun state capital, after he was honoured by the Nigeria Union of Journalists Correspondents in the state as a cultural ambassador.
According to The Punch, the OPC leader also bared his mind on  He condemned the killings of members of the sect.
Speaking on the Biafra agitation, Adams: ”I will just say that they (Biafra agitators) are entitled to their own self-determination. Look, there is a law in Africa that recognises right to self-determination. Also, there is a law in United Nations that recognises right to self-determination. There is a country in the United Nations that has a population of not up to 50,000 and their flag is at the United Nations.
“You can’t use force to co-opt people for the unity of Nigeria; you have to listen to their agitation. If we cannot give you secession, should we give you statism or regionalism? That is a process of negotiating. The British did not use force against Scotland when it seceded from Britain, and there is Catalona in Spain that wants to pull out, they didn’t use force against them.”
He also berated  , who were jubilating  by a Federal High Court, adding that it was uncalled for.
Speaking on the Zaria incident, Adams said: “What happened in Kaduna is not what Nigerians are expecting right now, especially with the crisis of Boko Haram, the agitation of the MASSOB.  I will appeal to the military and other security agencies to be calm when they have provocation from different citizens of this country.
“In civilised country, you don’t kill your citizens like that, even when they provoke you, you should pamper them in order to avoid such ugly situation. Even though they embarrassed the Chief of Army Staff, they (the army) should have disarmed them and arrest the leader for questioning and not using weapon to kill people like that. International community will not overlook such a thing.
“Killing armless and innocent people like fowl should not be accepted in any sane democracy. The president have to be very careful, he should not play into the hands of some people.”
